Playground Hexie Pillows

Snap. Crackle. Pop. From start to finish, these hexie pillows using Amy Sinibaldi‘s Playground Fabrics were a stream of consciousness journey that I never would’ve predicted would have ended so stunningly. All I knew when I began was that I wanted a project that used the entire collection. And upon closer inspection, the collection was perfection for a hexie project, which was something I’d never done, so I was stoked to embark.

Now before I get to the ooh la la, there were some neato things that I learned about. First were these thimble pads by Colonial Needles. After a day of slowly dying by needle pokes, these basically saved my life.

Also, I landed on these as my favorites. First, you need your threadcutterz ring. Also I played with a bunch of needles and threads and landed on Bohin milliner needles and Superior’s The Bottom Line thread. Also the Clover Needle Threader works perfectly with this combo.

Also this Ditsy Abrasion print above from The Denim Studio by AGF was a perfect fussy cutting companion to a Playground.

So now the ooh la la. First, the layouts for both versions. I tried to have enough similarities between the two to keep them related, but enough differences to keep them uniquely interesting.

Once I squared them up, I knew exactly how to quilt them. I used Pale Pink and Pale Green 50 wt Aurifil for their respective color ways. And quilting with Felicia and her laser made this an easy breezy quilt job.

With quilting done, the final decision was the pillow back. I actually had fully completed one using one of the Playground prints and decided I didn’t like it because the quilters cotton didn’t stand up to the front. So I perused all of the AGF canvases and landed on this print from Sew Caroline‘s Happy Home collection.

And without further ado, here are the final 14″ x 14″ pillows!!!

And as much as it pains me to sell these beauties, they are listed in my Etsy store. You can go directly to each listing by clicking on the picture of the one you’re interested in. And seriously the journey of these pillows was a beautiful one, so I’m happy to pass them on.

  1. Thank you, Thank you !!! I have been looking for these “thimble pads” and have been told that they are no longer available. Now I know where to look for them. I have never learned how to use a real thimble–no matter what kind/style they feel very strange and uncomfortable to me. I love these pads though, so thank you again. I will never be without them now 🙂

  2. When I saw these on instagram, I was amazed at the fact that you managed to piece some hexies in each quilt, perfectly matching the designs across more than one. It’s much easier to make out that there are in fact two hexies on my laptop than on my mini tablet. They are beautiful, the construction is perfect, and I love your choices for setting and pillow backs.

Great job. Wish I could afford them.
